A cashier quietly told me to check the bottom of my receipt before leaving the store. I almost ignored her… but something felt off. What I found changed everything. Has this ever happened to you?

The cashier leaned a little closer than usual as she handed me my receipt. Her voice dropped just enough to make me pause.

“Check the bottom of your receipt before you leave,” she said quietly.

I nodded, a bit confused, and slipped the receipt into the bag without thinking much of it. It had been a long day. I just wanted to get home, put the groceries away, and rest. Advice from a stranger at the checkout line wasn’t exactly high on my list of priorities.

But as I walked toward the exit, something about her tone stayed with me. It wasn’t casual. It wasn’t friendly small talk. It felt… deliberate. Almost urgent.

I stopped just before the automatic doors and pulled the receipt out.

At first glance, everything looked normal—items listed one after another, prices aligned neatly, taxes calculated at the bottom. Nothing unusual. I almost folded it back up.

Then I noticed a small line of text at the very bottom, something I would have easily missed if I hadn’t been looking carefully.

It wasn’t bold. It wasn’t highlighted. Just a short sentence printed in smaller font than everything else.

“Customer selected for verification. Please review purchase details.”

My stomach tightened slightly.

Verification? What did that even mean?

I looked back at the receipt, this time more carefully. That’s when I saw it—an item I didn’t recognize. It was listed halfway down the receipt, between things I actually bought. The price wasn’t huge, but it wasn’t small either. Enough to matter.

At first, I wondered if I had simply forgotten picking it up. But the more I thought about it, the more certain I became: I had never put that item in my cart.

I turned around and headed back to the checkout area.

The cashier noticed me immediately. She didn’t look surprised.

“I think there’s a mistake,” I said, handing her the receipt.

She glanced at it, then nodded slightly, almost as if she had expected this exact moment.
