My sister stole the man I was going to marry and got pregnant, but when she tried to move into the house we had just bought, she got a big surprise.

I found out my sister was pregnant with my fiancé’s baby on the same day the real estate agent handed me the keys to our « forever home. » The ink on the closing contract had barely dried.

Ethan smiled with that tired, proud expression, as if we had just climbed a mountain together. It was a craftsman-style house, with three bedrooms and a veranda that wrapped around the front—the kind where you can already imagine Christmas photos. I was holding a folder with warranties and manuals when my phone vibrated.

Maya… my older sister.

Can we talk? It’s urgent.

I almost ignored it. Maya and I hadn’t been close for years, but lately she’d been strangely kind: commenting on my photos, sending heart emojis, asking about the house. I figured she wanted to borrow money, as usual. I went into the empty room and answered.

– What it was?

Her voice trembled.

I’m pregnant.

I blinked.

Well… congratulations?

« No, » she whispered. « It’s Ethan’s. »

The ground seemed to tilt beneath my feet. I gave a short, automatic laugh.

That’s not funny.

« I’m not kidding, » she said, her voice thin, as if she were about to cry. « It happened while you were planning the wedding. We tried to stop it. He said he’d tell you. He didn’t. And now… he’s choosing me. »

My hand went numb around the keychain.

— Choosing me?

Maya sniffled.

He’s leaving. I told him you’d react badly and make a scene, but I’m trying to stay calm. I just… needed you to hear this from me.

From me. As if that were something noble.

I didn’t scream. I didn’t break down. I just left the house, sat in the car, and stared at the steering wheel until my vision blurred.

Ten minutes later, Ethan came out whistling, carrying a color chart of paint.

« Honey, » he said, opening the passenger door, « I was thinking of a warm white for the kitchen… »

I picked up the phone.

Maya said she’s pregnant. With your child.

His smile faded so quickly it seemed mechanical. He swallowed hard.

She called you.

« Is that true? » My voice came out calmly, and that scared me more than the anger.

Ethan looked away.

– It is complicated.

It’s either yes or no.

He exhaled forcefully.

Yes. But listen…

I interrupted.

Since when?

His silence answered before his mouth.

I nodded slowly.

— And you’re going to leave me.

Ethan’s eyes flashed with irritation, as if I were being dramatic.

— I didn’t plan this. Maya needs support. She’s pregnant. I can’t just…

« Then I’m disposable, » I whispered.

He leaned toward me, lowering his voice.

— You’ll be fine. The house is in both our names. We’ll sort this out like adults.

That night he didn’t go home. He went to stay with Maya.

Two weeks later, I was in my apartment when Maya sent me a photo: her hand on her belly, Ethan’s hand on top of hers, and behind them… my balcony.

Message: « Day of change ».

My blood turned to ice. I drove there so fast I barely remember the way. Their cars were at the entrance. Boxes were scattered across the lawn. Maya was laughing, giving orders to the porters as if the place belonged to her.

I went up onto the balcony.

– What are you doing?

Maya smiled slowly, arrogantly.

Ethan said you’d be reasonable. You’re going out, so we’re going in.

I looked at the front door… and then noticed the new lock.
